CHAPTER EIGHT

LILAH CRADLED LUKE’S big hand in hers and gently washed the snake-bite area with warm soapy water. This was something she should have done soon after he’d been bitten and blushed when she recalled why she hadn’t.

Frowning at his hand, she probed the red swollen area around the puncture wounds and focused on being a medic. Not an easy task. Not when the heat of his body reminded her of the past couple of hours. Not when every move had her T-shirt—or rather his T-shirt—brushing against her tender nipples. Not when she might melt into a little puddle right there on the stool. Or maybe climb onto his lap.

“This looks infected already,” she huffed, ducking behind long ropes of tousled curls to escape his too-perceptive gaze. His too-perceptive, hot gaze—she corrected with a gulp—currently locked on her face and filled with smoldering heat. She tingled in all the places he’d spent the last couple of hours discovering with his mouth and she didn’t have to be a mind reader to know what he was thinking. “Are you sure that snake wasn’t poisonous?”

Luke reached out and swept her hair behind her ear as he dipped his head to peer into her face. “Are you blushing?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” she said a little breathlessly, dabbing the area dry with an alcohol swab and trying to pretend her face wasn’t burning. “It’s just a little hot in here.”

His chuckle set fire to her nerve endings and further tightened her nipples. Every time she inhaled, she sucked in the potent mix of pheromones and warm male skin. It was wildly intoxicating. And probably why she felt the need to put her mouth on him all over again.

She sneaked a peek and caught him looking at her breasts.

“Do you need a tetanus shot?” she asked breathlessly to distract him and when his gaze moved slowly up her chest, past her chin and lingered briefly on her mouth before finally lifting to hers, she thought she was having a stroke.

His mouth curled at one corner and he shook his head. “Nope. I’m good.” Oh, wow, he certainly was. Especially when he—God, no, she thought wildly, and forced herself to focus on the antibiotic ointment she was applying to the bite area. Don’t think about that.

Casting around for something to say, she opened her mouth and, “I’m sorry about...before,” popped out before she could stop it.

“Before?”

Lilah licked suddenly dry lips and sneaked another peek. “When I...um...threw my shoe at the snake and...”

“Hit me in the nu—?”

“It was an accident,” she interrupted with a spluttered laugh. “I panicked.”

Luke smirked. “Good thing you throw like a girl or I’d have been out of action.”

“Out of—? Okay, never mind.” Yeesh. Were they really going to discuss that?

Ducking her head, she hastily covered the wound site with an adhesive bandage before sliding off the stool to prepare a syringe of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds. And to move away from the heady scent of his skin. It was making her feel a little drunk.
